What is Pupil Premium?
At Coberley C of E Primary School, the Pupil Premium is extra funding provided by the Government to help support children who may face additional challenges. This includes pupils who are eligible for Free School Meals now or at any point in the last six years, children who have been in care for more than six months, and children of service families.
The funding is used to provide extra support to help pupils make the best possible progress. We carefully monitor how the Pupil Premium is spent and are required to share information about the impact it has on children’s learning and achievement.
More information about our Pupil Premium funding and how it is used can be found below and in our Pupil Premium Strategy Statement. The Department for Education expect all schools to publish a strategy for the schools use of pupil premium.

Our Vision and Ethos
At Coberley C of E Primary School, we recognise that some pupils face barriers to learning. Our vision, “Nurtured, Cherished and Inspired for Fullness of Life,” underpins our commitment to promoting both pupils’ wellbeing and academic achievement. We work proactively to identify and remove barriers so that all pupils are able to make strong progress.
Our Aims for Pupils
Our aim is for all pupils, including those eligible for Pupil Premium funding, to leave Coberley as confident, well-rounded individuals who are well prepared for the next stage of their education. Pupil Premium funding supports pupils to:
- achieve as highly as possible across the curriculum
- be academically and emotionally prepared for secondary school
- experience success in a wide range of areas, including academic, sporting and creative activities
- develop positive relationships and demonstrate kindness and respect
- understand and live out the school’s values
- begin to form their own personal values
- develop self-confidence and self-esteem to make the most of their individual strengths
Use of Pupil Premium Funding
The Pupil Premium funding is used strategically to address identified needs. As a small school, some interventions are delivered inclusively and may also benefit pupils who are not eligible for Pupil Premium, ensuring support is targeted while meeting wider needs.
Targeted Academic Support
A significant proportion of Pupil Premium funding is directed towards improving outcomes in core subjects, recognising the importance of strong foundations in English and mathematics. Support includes:
- targeted small-group work, one-to-one interventions and in-class support with a class teacher, HLTA or Teaching Assistant
- dedicated focused sessions with the class teacher
- access to technology and evidence-based learning programmes
- strategies and resources to promote a love of reading and improve literacy skills
Wider Development and Enrichment
We also provide regular Forest School experiences for all pupils from Reception to Year 6. These sessions support pupils’ personal development by strengthening communication skills, teamwork, resilience, problem-solving and positive social interaction. Please see our Forest School curriculum for more information about the lessons taught.
Personal Development, Behaviour and Attitudes
In line with the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework (EIF), Coberley C of E Primary School places a strong emphasis on pupils’ personal development and behaviour and attitudes to learning. Alongside academic support, we recognise that children’s wellbeing, confidence and sense of belonging are key factors in their success at school.
Our approach is informed by Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, which highlights the importance of meeting pupils’ basic, emotional and social needs before they are able to fully engage in learning. Where these needs are not met, pupils may find it more difficult to make progress.
We work closely in partnership with families to remove barriers and support pupils’ readiness to learn. Following careful consideration of individual circumstances, Pupil Premium funding may be used to provide targeted support, including:
- help with sourcing school uniform
- support with transport where appropriate
- financial assistance for educational trips and visits
- mentoring and pastoral support
- access to counselling services
- support for transition to secondary school
- interventions to develop communication, social and emotional skills
- access to extra-curricular clubs and enrichment opportunities
- support with breakfast club and wraparound care, including Sprint Active Provision
These strategies support pupils to feel safe, valued and motivated, promote positive behaviour and attitudes to learning, and enable all pupils to engage fully with school life and achieve their potential.
Pupil Premium funding is not allocated to individual children, and not all eligible pupils receive the same support. Every child is different, and the level and type of support provided reflects each child’s individual needs.
The school reviews how Pupil Premium funding is used each year, carefully looking at pupils’ progress and wellbeing. We use trusted research and guidance, including from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) and Ofsted, to make sure the support we provide has a positive impact and offers good value for money.
