Our Music Curriculum

"Music is the universal language of mankind." - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

At Coberley, we believe that music is an essential part of every child’s education — a joyful way to express creativity, emotion, and community. Our music curriculum is developed from the National Curriculum and aims to nurture a lifelong love of music while developing key skills in listening, performing, and composing.

We follow the Charanga music scheme, which provides fun and engaging lessons where pupils explore a wide range of musical styles, instruments, and traditions from around the world. Children learn to sing with confidence, keep rhythm, and collaborate to create and perform their own music. As they move through the school, they build their musical knowledge and vocabulary, gaining an understanding of how music is structured and how it can communicate ideas and feelings.

Pupils enjoy hands-on instrumental learning, with opportunities to play the recorder, viola, and violin through 10-week sessions delivered by the Gloucestershire Music Service. In addition, our peripatetic teachers, Mr Mead and Mr Foster, offer individual and small-group lessons in guitar and piano for those wishing to develop their skills further.

Our aim is to inspire every child to find their own voice through music — whether as a performer, composer, or enthusiastic listener — and to celebrate the joy and connection that music brings to our school community. Every child takes part in an annual play, sings as part of daily Collective Worship, and shares performances with parents and the wider community both in school and at our local church, St Giles.
