Our Modern Foreign Language Curriculum

"To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world" - Chinese proverb

At Coberley, Key Stage 2 children are introduced to the joy of learning an additional foreign language through stimulating and interactive Spanish lessons. Our aim is to nurture a genuine interest and positive curiosity about languages, while deepening pupils’ understanding of other cultures and the wider world around them. Our Spanish offering is based on the National Curriculum programme of study.

Through our Spanish curriculum, children will:

  • Develop enthusiasm and confidence in learning an additional language
  • Build a strong foundation in the Spanish language through engaging reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities.
  • Learn about Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries across the globe, including their landscapes, cultures, and the people who call them home.

In the longer term, we hope our pupils will feel inspired to continue studying languages beyond Key Stage 2 and become lifelong language learners.

At Coberley we use the Language Angels programme and resources to teach Spanish which ensures we offer a relevant, broad and vibrant foreign languages curriculum that inspires and excites our children, using a wide variety of child-friendly topics and themes. Within each unit, there is a focus upon four key language learning skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing, and phonics and grammar rules and patterns are fully embedded. Lessons are stimulating and interactive and include the use of songs and games. These can be accessed outside of the lesson via individual Language Angels logins to enable children to practise in class using their tablets, or at home.

In KS2 children experience well-planned weekly lessons, that are adapted and differentiated where necessary to provide appropriate levels of challenge for a range of learners within mixed age classes. Units and topics are carefully selected with the intention to help children build, review and consolidate their knowledge. We use regular retrieval practice time within class to further support this. Class teachers use formative assessment in all lessons to identify children's understanding of the key knowledge and skills. Children also complete an end of unit quiz in all four learning areas, covering key vocabulary and language elements. Progress of each child’s language journey is tracked using Insight. From time to time, we may step outside the Language Angels scheme to connect vocabulary with topic work, follow children’s interests, or explore cultural celebrations such as Christmas.

In KS1 children are encouraged to learn greetings and common phrases in a variety of different languages for example when answering the register and greeting each other. They share texts that offer insights into other cultures and spoken languages such as ‘Hello World’ by Manja Stojic and ‘All Are Welcome’ by Alexandra Penfold as well as bilingual versions of favourite stories such as La Oruga Muy Hambrienta (The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle) and How the Dinosaur got his Shoes by Jonny Pryn. Owls and Kestrels class also share their Ricitos de Oro y Los Tres Osos (Goldilocks and The Three Bears) stories with Robins class. During the summer term Year 2 are exposed to the introductory parts of Year 3’s Spanish sessions to build enthusiasm and aid their smooth transition into full sessions in KS2.
