What's happening at Coberley?
Atlas Sports PE Lesson
What a way to finish such a productive Summer term. On Friday 22nd May, for our Atlas Sports PE lessons all classes (and some teachers!) took part in a water slip and slide and a game of water dodgeball. A great way to cool off in the heatwave too! A huge thankyou to Mr Thompson for organising this on the last day of term.
Atlas Sports Hall KS2 Athletics Competition
Our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils took part in a multi-school athletics sports competition on Wednesday 20th May 2026, facing five other local schools and they returned as champions. The children came running into school, absolutely buzzing with excitement, egar to tell Mrs Black that they had beaten the other schools. Their joy was infectious, and their achievement is something we will all remember.
Every child received a medal, and we are now proudly displaying a large winners' trophy in school. Events included an obstacle course, relays, the up-and-over race, hurdles, a 6-lap relay, chest push, javelin, vertical jump, standing long jump, standing triple jump and speed bouce. It was a true test of teamwork, determination and resilience. These qualities we value deeply in our school community.
A huge thankyou to Mr Davis for leading the team so brilliantly, and to all the parents who kindly drove and supported the children. They reported that the pupils were exceptionally well behaved and represented our school beautifully. This is a shining example of celebrating success together.
Kingfishers Trip to The Living Rainforest
On Tuesday 19th May 2026, Kingfishers Class visited The Living Rainforest in Thatcham, to experience the rainforest habitat first-hand as part of their current topic. The children were able to feel the humidity inside the rainforest and saw a variety of plants and animals they have studied about in the classroom. The tour guides were certainly impressed with the children's rainforest knowledge, enthusiastically pointing out heliconias, bromeliads and epiphytes!
We were also lucky enough to get a good glimpse of Cinnamon the two-toed sloth who was hand-fed fruit by her keeper. Other animals included a six-banded armadillo, an emerald tree boa, poison dart frogs and a noisy toucan! Thank you to all of our parents for their contributions to make the trip happen, and a huge thankyou to parent Mrs Williams for accompanying Miss Dowdall and Mr Davis on the day.
Colour Run 2026
Our annual Colour Run was a joyful celebration of energy, teamwork and community spirit and together we raised a whopping £870 for our Library Refurbishment Project. This is a tremendous achievement for our school, and we are so grateful for the generosity shown by our families.
A huge thank you goes to the Friends of Coberley, Mr and Mrs Houghton, Cheryl and Camilla for their fantastic support in preparing for the event. From creating the beautifully colourful raffle hampers to delivering the hay bales, every contribution helped make the day vibrant, memorable and full of fun.
We are also incredibly appreciative of all our parents and children for the wonderful, coloured gifts they donated. The generosity across our school community continues to shine, and it is this spirit that makes events like the Colour Run so special.
Thank you as well to our dedicated staff team, and to Miss Dowdall for leading the raffle with such enthusiasm. This event truly showcased the strength of our community spirit and the power of coming together for a shared goal.
Muslim Chaplain - Mr Atique Miah
On 30th April, we were delighted to welcome Muslim Chaplain Mr Atique Miah, who spent the day with us and visited every class. The children were excited to meet him and even more excited when he joined in with a lively game of football at lunchtime. During his visit, Mr Miah spoke to the children about his faith, what it means to him to live a good and meaningful life, and how people understand the idea of God in different ways. He encouraged pupils to think about their own beliefs, to share their interpretations, and to listen respectfully to others.
The discussions brought out a wonderful range of world views and religions represented in our school community. Children asked thoughtful questions, offered their own ideas, and showed great curiosity and respect throughout. It was a valuable opportunity for pupils to explore big questions, celebrate diversity, and learn more about the beliefs that shape people’s lives.
Atlas Sports KS1 Football Festival
On 29th April 2026 Year 1 and Year 2 pupils took part in a fantastic football festival this week, focusing on learning and developing the fundamental skills of football. Children practised dribbling, tackling and simple team play before putting their new skills into action in a series of friendly round-robin games. It wasn’t a tournament, but a brilliant opportunity for pupils to build confidence, learn the basics of the sport and enjoy playing alongside children from other schools. In total, eight schools attended, and the event was held at Painswick Rugby Club, creating a lively and supportive atmosphere for everyone involved.
A huge thank you to the parents who kindly helped with transport, and to Mr Davis for accompanying and supporting the children throughout the day.
Atlas Sports Small Schools Netball Competition
On Thursday 16th April 2026, our Year 5 and 6 girls took part in an ‘Atlas Sports Small Schools Netball Competition’, competing against six other teams. They played brilliantly and represented the school with great enthusiasm and teamwork. As Thea said afterwards, “It was such good fun, Mrs Black.” Well done to all involved. What a fantastic start to the term. A huge thank you to all the parents who kindly helped with transport and to Mr Davis, who accompanied the team throughout the competition.
Coberley Equestrian Team
Coberley Primary School Equestrian (NSEA) team has been recently set up for the keen horse riders in our school. Our team are sponsored by Petways Ltd. Petways is owned and run by Sam and Nigel and was founded in 2020 shortly after Sam recovered from cancer treatment for the second time and realised going back into practice as a veterinary nurse would be too much! The company regularly collect rescue dogs and cats from Europe and unite them with their new owners with the help of several wonderful long term staff members.
Evie and Annabelle represented Coberley at the NSEA competition and both rode a great round, with Annabelle and Munchie winning the class and a rosette for the best horsemanship. Annabelle has also qualified for the Hickstead Eventer's Challenge Championship and Grassroots SJ Championships. Well done team Coberley!
Year 6 Wildlife Quiz
On Monday 16th March 2026, we were lucky to attend the Schools Wildlife Quiz run by Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust. These four Year 6 pupils proved themselves to be very knowledgeable and they came close runners up. Thank you to Charlton Kings Junior School for hosting and we wish them luck in the next round. Our pupils made us proud with their enthusiasm and knowledge, and their impeccable behaviour. Well done team Coberley!
Year 6 STEM Day
On Friday 13th April 2026, Year 6 were very fortunate to attend Berkeley Green UTC's STEM day. They had practical experience of programming and robotics, and learned a lot about engineering. It was a wonderful day that we shared with Cranham and Sheepscombe schools. The children were engaged and enthused throughout. Thank you Berkeley Green for inviting us and for giving the children such a brilliant experience.
A write up of the event can be read here - https://academytrust.sgscol.ac.uk/news/sgs-berkeley-green-utc/year-6-pupils-explore-engineering-and-technology-at-berkeley-green-utc
Spring Cricket Sessions
For Spring term, Gloucestershire Cricket Foundation visited us weekly to teach our classes to play cricket, an additional session to their regular PE lessons. Robins, Kingfishers, Owls and Kestrels classes had individual sessions with the coach, Luke, who created a friendly environment for all children to have a go, even if they hadn't played cricket before. This taught academic and life skills along with playing the team sport, and learning how to bat, bowl and catch. In addition to this, a cricket club took place after school for children to attend and play mixed-aged games. The sessions inspired children to be excited about the sport, which was then often seen played at breaktime and lunchtime with the support of our teaching partners. Another great opportunity for our children to further their sporting skills, whilst having fun!
Easter Service 2026
Our annual Easter Service was held at our local church, St Giles Parish Church in Coberley on 27th March 2026. All children in the school had opportunity to contribute to the service, starting with Robins Class who sang and played 'Hot Cross Buns' on recorders. Kingfishers Class spoke about different celebrations of Easter around the World, holding up the relevant flag to the country, which was linked to their recent topic. Owls Class read the Easter Story in parts, with whole school hymns sung at relevant points of the story. Kestrels Class read The Easter Story Poem, which was followed by the End of Term Cups and Awards presented by Mrs Black. The blessing was taken by Rev. Pooley, and the service concluded with a joyful performance from Kingfishers Play of Cinderella. Thank you to all families who attended our Easter Service, and we hope you have a peaceful Easter break.
Kingfishers Performance: Cinderella
On Wednesday 18th March 2026 Kingfishers Class put on an incredible performance of Cinderella. What a show, such talent and hard work on display! Cinderella gave every child in Kingfishers Class the chance to shine on stage. There was a beautiful princess, a handsome prince, two hilarious step-sisters, a bossy stepmother, a magical Fairy Godmother complete with carriage, and a variety of roles who wouldn’t have made the play possible without! Their creativity, confidence, dancing, and most of all their brilliant comedy brought such joy to the entire audience. It’s easy to forget that they are only 6, 7, and 8 years old when they perform with such maturity and flair. The quality this year genuinely felt comparable to a theatre school production. The children were supported by Miss Dowdall, Mr Davis, Miss Andrews and Miss Cole throughout the 3-week process, to put on the performances the children will cherish forever.
World Book Day 2026
This year for World Book Day, we saw a fabulous variety of costumes to celebrate the day. We had an amazing Lorax, who stayed in character all day, a super cute Coco Chanel and a handcrafted F1 car, alongside a huge array of costumes. A big well done to all our children who dressed up for the occasion. World Book Day was held during the National Year of Reading under the theme "Go All In," which focused on helping children dive deeper into the topics and stories they already love. During the day each class had reading themed activities, including Year 6 reading to their Reception buddies, and Kingfishers Class creating their own sticker story.
To further this, we had Alex, the Travelling Librarian visit our own library and organise our wide range of books to create an excellent, new and easy to use system, providing every child in our school opportunity to regularly borrow books from our library. An enormous thank you to Alex for bringing our library back to life.
Gymnastics Competition
Coberley took part in the Atlas First Steps Gymnastics competition, and it was such a successful team building experience. The group of Year 3 and Year 4 girls represented the school brilliantly and embraced the challenge of trying something new. They were confident, enthusiastic competitors, having to learn the short routine and perform this for a judge. There were also opportunities to showcase further gymnastics skills, with each child being cheered on by their team. Well done Coberley, and thank you to the parents who drove children to the event.
Kingfishers UK Landmark Model Exhibition
On Friday 13th February 2026, Kingfishers held a model exhibition in the school hall as part of their topic learning for 'The UK and Its History'. For their Design and Technology learning this term, each child was tasked to plan, design and evaluate a human or physical UK landmark model. The children demonstrated their creativity and the designs were amazing, with a London Eye made out of mini plastic glasses, Durdle Door from clay and shells and Giants Causeway out of smartie tubes! As a class, Kingfishers also created a model of Coberley Village, taking inspiration from their walk around the local area, and including types of housing and land use. The exhibition was open to everyone to see the variety of models. A huge thankyou to Kingfishers parents for supporting their children in their learning during this topic.
Trim Trail Update
During the Spring term, our outside trim trail has had a well deserved glow up. Funding for this improvement was provided by the Highways and Cheltenham Round Table - a huge thankyou. The upgrade was then completed by Creative Play, alongside two generous parents Ed Williams and Rich Hartop who gave their time at weekends and half term to make this possible.
The extension to our original trim trail includes a rope bridge, balance beams and an inclusive roundabout. Available for all children to use, it provides valuable practice of physical development skills, along with communication and social interaction.
Bronze Accreditation for myHappymind
Happy Spring Term! We are finishing the first week of term with great news of achieving our Bronze Accreditation with myHappymind. myHappymind is a mental and emotional wellbeing NHS backed programme and we teach it weekly alongside our PSHE Curriculum. We consider the mental health and wellbeing of our Children, Staff, Governors and Parents as one of our top priorities and are proud of our Bronze accreditation.
Each child at Coberley has access to the myHappymind programme at home through their parent resources, and therefore makes the programme accessible from anywhere - not just in school! Our staff wellbeing is also supported through myHappymind, with mini masterclasses and CPD available.

Church Carol Service
Collective worship is a central aspect of life at Coberley Primary, and we are fortunate to have strong links with the local village church, St. Giles’. This link enable pupils to participate regularly in acts of worship that are rooted in the schools’ Christian vision and values.
As part of the school’s Christmas celebrations, pupils gathered in the church for a service that provided meaningful opportunities for worship, reflection and spiritual development. The service was well attended by parents, carers, family members and members of the local community, further strengthening the partnership between the school, church and village.
Pupils from across the school contributed with confidence and reverence. Robins delighted the audience with songs from their Nativity play - Whoops A Daisy Angel, while the school choir presented a performance. Kingfishers Class captivated everyone with their Nativity puppet show and Owls Class proudly presented ‘A Visit from St. Nicholas’ By Clement Clarke Moore. The service concluded with thoughtful reflections from Kestrels on what Christmas means to them. Their contributions demonstrated respect for others’ views and an understanding of Christian beliefs and values.
Overall, the service was an act of collective worship that supported pupils’ spiritual, moral and social development, celebrated the Christian story and reinforced the schools’ Christian identity within its community.
Pantomime Trip
In the build up to Christmas, all children and staff at Coberley travelled to the Cheltenham Everyman Pantomime to see Robin Hood and his Merry Men, including Friar Tweedy Tuck.
This annual event is a highlight in our calendar and this year we even got to sit right at the front! There were lots of laugh out loud moments, and the children did us proud with their participation and excellent behaviour. We are sure everyone enjoyed their trip, and the icecream in the interval!
Crazy Hair Day
Coberley hosted its first Crazy Hair Day where children (and staff!) came to school with the craziest hair they could design.
What a fantastic variety of hairstyles we saw, including coloured hair, glitter, bobbles and even a birds nest bun! The money raised will be put towards our current fundraising for 2 new interactive whiteboards, making all rooms in the school accessible for learning.
Kingfishers Viola Performance
Over the past 10 weeks, Kingfishers Class have been learning to play the viola with Mrs Hatton from Gloucestershire Music. The children have demonstrated great determination in learning the viola, but the lessons also proved valuable with many of the music National Curriculum objectives taught, including listening and evaluating music and learning about the tempo, dynamics and structure. Kingfishers were very pleased to have KPop Demon Hunters songs involved in their lessons too, and the opportunity to hire a viola over the period of lessons. The 10 week programme was concluded with a performance to parents to showcase the skills taught and practise performing in front of an audience. A huge thankyou to Mrs Hatton for the excellent lessons and thankyou to those parents who supported the class with the performance. Robins Class will be next to have Recorder lessons with Gloucestershire Music.
Children in Need
On Friday 14th November, Coberley children and families raised funds for Children in Need. Everyone took on the challenge to dress up in yellow, spots, or both, and what some fabulous outfits we saw! In total we raised a huge £233 for the charity.
Children in Need support children and their families with mental health struggles, rising levels of poverty, the ongoing pressures of social inequality and the negative impact of family challenges. All of these can present massive barriers to a healthy childhood and our valuable funds raised can support children throughout the country. Thank you to everyone for the hugely generous donations.
Kingfishers Class Trip to We the Curious
On Wednesday 5th November, Kingfishers Class visited We The Curious science museum in Bristol as part of their Space topic. The day started with time to explore the space elements of the museum and putting their Space knowledge learnt in the classroom to good use. The class then visited the planetarium where they got to see the solar system, galaxies, the asteriod belt and explore Pluto's surface. Two children were selected to take part in the planetarium visit, one being the photographer and one controlling how the planetarium moved above our heads. After lunch, the children took part in a Destination Space workshop, where the children had a vairety of challenges to complete including building and launching a foam rocket, identifying suitable materials for an astronaut suit and finally feeling the effects of air resistance with a parachute. A huge thankyou to the two parents who supported the class on the trip.
Remembrance Day
On Tuesday 11th November at 11o'clock, the whole school walked to the war memorial to participate in a moving Remembrance Day service. The event was led by Rev Cliff Pooley and Mrs Duncan McGaw. Year 6 children read the names of the brave individuals who fought and died in conflict and laid a wreath in their honour.
It was wonderful to see our school community come together to remember and reflect. The respectful silence, the reading of names and the act of laying the wreath helped everyone understand the importance of remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. We are proud of our pupils for their reverence and participation.
Hedgehog Talk
Enthusiastic and immensely knowledgeable volunteers kindly came to talk to the whole school about the work that they do at Brockworth Hedgehog Rescue. We learned about how the patients are nursed, the causes of their admission and where they come from. Quite a few hedgehogs come from the local villages so it was very helpful for us to learn how to help ailing hedgehogs. For their own safety and well-being, a real hedgehog could not be brought to school but we had lots of photos to look at and Martha, a six feet tall hedgehog character, was very welcome! We were advised in school to protect hedgehogs from getting caught in netting by lifting our football goals when not in use for a long time as they can travel up to two miles a night and get stuck, and to contact the rescue centre if we have concerns through https://brockworthhedgehogrescue.co.uk/ The children took away with them a lot of information about hedgehog care and their habits too.
Thank you for all our children for their donations of cat food - they were very much appreciated - and of course a huge thank you to Vicki and her team for coming out to visit us.
Author Visit: Sian Hughes
Local Cheltenham based author, Sian Hughes visited Coberley and held two reading sessions, with KS1 and KS2 to read her book 'Cat Wanted', a fabulous rhyming picture book illustrated by Elina Oplakanska. The story book was brought to life with beautiful props and the children had opportunities to ask Sian questions about being an author. The KS1 session read the narrative, where Toff the Cat and mysterious Betty find lots of treasure, which our younger children enjoyed finding in Sian's bag. A huge thank you to Sian for visiting us and sharing your story. We look forward to the next book!
Cheltenham Literature Festival
All children at Coberley had opportunity to visit the local Cheltenham Literature Festival this year, hosted by the Cheltenham Festivals team. Firstly, Robins took a trip to attend a drawing event with Rob Biddulph. The theatre was packed with enthusiastic artists of all ages and the children even got to meet Rob who kindly signed a book for our school.
On Tuesday Years 4, 5 and 6 attended the Literature Festival to listen to one of their favourite authors, Pari Thomson. The children used their creativity to not only name a bear, but also create some quick pieces of artwork! They also couldn't resist trying on some of the fabulous outfits at The Den. Another great experience for our lucky children.
Finally it was Kingfishers class turn and their trip included helping the Mad Hatter find her hat, completing the Escape Room puzzle trail and listening to Eric Huang speak about his series of books, Guardians of the New Moon. The engaging talk inspired the children to create their own characters and settings in the classroom writing.
Climbing Wall
On 23rd September, every child at Coberley had the opportunity to experience an on-site climbing wall from 270 Climbing Park with instructor Dave. Every pupil had the chance to challenge themselves, support their friends and build confidence. The climbing wall had everyone buzzing with excitement. A huge thank you all the staff who helped make the day both safe and inspiring. We saw determination, courage, and teamwork in action!
270 Climbing is local to Coberley and has both indoor and outdoor climbing facilities. It is an excellent activity to support children's physical education and their website provides more information - https://www.270climbing.com
Colour Run 2025
The school grounds burst into a myriad of colours once again in the Summer of 2025! It was the Colour Run organised by Mr and Mrs Houghton with fantastic support from the PTA- and the weather couldn’t have been better. Children dashed around an obstacle course with huge enthusiasm as safe, organic colours flew through the air, painting their milky white t shirts into vibrant colours of the rainbow. Some adults jumped in to join the fun too! Laughter, cheers and bright splashes of colour brought the outdoors to life.
After the run, everyone cooled off with refreshing drinks and juicy watermelons. The event ended with an exciting lucky dip where winners walked away with fun gift hampers. The fund collected went towards school development, so thank you to everyone who helped make the day a colourful success- we can’t wait for the next one!
World Book Day
On 7th March, Coberley celebrated World Book Day and what an amazing array of costumes we saw this year! This year the theme was 'Read Your Way' and was aimed at bringing the fun of reading to more children, to celebrate their choices and encourage everyone to read their own way.
Our costumes ranged from Postman Pat to Hermione Grainger, to Alex Ryder, to Mr Bump, to Snail and the Whale (well done to those Year 6 girls for their excellent collaboration) and Danny the Champion of the World! The talent and creativity shown by children, parents and staff alike was so impressive – well done to the Coberley community for displaying creativity like never before.
Ben Miller visits Coberley
On 6th March, we felt like the most fortunate school in the land when author, actor and comedian Ben Miller came to see us the day before World Book Day! He spoke to Years 3-6 about his books, his acting career and his comedy work.
After reading an excerpt from his new book, Diary of a Big Bad Wolf, he opened a Q&A session with the children. They asked some brilliant questions, including ‘which is your favourite book?’, ‘what’s Mr Bean like?’, ‘were you the man with foggy windows in Paddington?’ and ‘did you really jump out of that plane in Johnny English?’
He then signed copies of their books and the children eagerly returned home with their signed books to start ploughing through them as quickly as possible. Some of the children were even lucky enough to get their hands on a copy of his new book 10 days before it is officially released.
A huge thankyou to Ben Miller for visiting us. A day to remember at Coberley!
iSing Pop Concert
For many years, Sylvie Pearce was a great friend to the children and staff of Coberley C of E Primary School. She visited the school weekly for 'Open the Book' until October; during each session she read and acted out bible stories with other members of the Churn Valley Benefice, as well as leading hymn practice with the 70 children of the school.
In a fitting tribute to Sylvie, following her sad and unexpected passing, we worked with iSingPop to teach the children a number of inspirational songs, in support of collective worship. On 29th January, a concert was held at St Giles Church, Coberley, to celebrate the life of Sylvie.
The concert was a very well attended event with parents, carers and staff of the school, as well as members of the local community, packing the church to watch the children perform their recently learnt songs and dances beautifully. Sylvie would’ve been so proud of each and every one of them.
Cook with Josie
During the course of the Spring term, Josie has been in regularly to cook with all the children. Year 6 made Polish dumplings, Year One made cheese scones and Reception made Pizzas – there has been a great variety of food created, cooked and eaten! Each child involved has learnt food preparation skills from weighing, mixing, rolling and kneading. The last session of this season is at the start of the summer term for Year 3. It’s been great to get the children involved in preparing food and links directly to the Design and Technology Curriculum strand of cookery.
Ronnie McGrath - Beats Workshop
We were thrilled to welcome Mr. Ronnie McGrath to our school on 15th November. The entire afternoon sparkled with energy as Mr. McGrath lit up the school hall with his simple yet wonderfully rhythmic verses. Not only is he a poet, but he is also a talented visual artist, writer and an educator.
He captivated us with vibrant Ankara fabric patterns, showing how each design can inspire personal interpretation through our five senses. He opened our eyes to the stunning artworks of Black British artists such as Tam Joseph, Yinka Shonibare and Lina Iris Viktor. Mr. McGrath also celebrated the remarkable achievements of author Malorie Blackman, film director Steve Rodney McQueen, rapper and singer Stormzy and footballer Jay Williams.
It was an unforgettable afternoon - rich with creativity, inspiration and learning about the powerful contributions of influential Black figures, including Mr. McGrath himself. A huge thankyou to Ronnie for visiting us and inspiring our children.
Bee Talk
On 27th June 2024, Coberley welcomed Cirencester and District Bee Keepers into our school. The volunteers talked passionately about looking after bees and provided each class with opportunity to look at a working hive, and spot the Queen bee! We learnt a lot of facts about Bees during the afternoon, and the children could ask questions to their knowlegable volunteers. A huge thank you for visiting Coberley!
South West Ski Champions 2023
Bet you didn't know that Coberley had a ski team?! We entered a team of six children to the South West Ski School Championships, held at Gloucester Ski Centre on Sunday 14th May. The team was made up of George, Aila, Charlotte, Ally, Georgie and Chloe who each had to compete in a timed slalom. Congratulations goes to George who took the prize for Fastest Novice skier, and Georgie achieved third place in the girls' Year 5-6 category. However, we weren't done with the silverware! Seeing off stiff competition from the likes of Rendcomb College, Stover School and Clifton College, the team saved their best till last with their combined times securing Coberley second place in the Primary School Category! A very big congratulations to all!
PRIDE OF THE COTSWOLDS: School of the Year
Coberley C of E Primary School
For such a small school, there’s a lot going on at Coberley.
Friday morning runs, a variety of after school clubs and summer and Christmas fayres all part of life there.
The person nominating the school said: “The locals have watched the school grow and develop, they follow the academic results and are proud such a small rural school is doing so well.”
A spokeswoman for the school said: “We are thrilled to have reached the finals of The Pride of the Cotswolds Awards and are delighted to have the chance to showcase our wonderful school at this prestigious event.”
