Maths

Reception: In maths we will be exploring patterns, comparing and sorting objects, shapes and starting to expand our number knowledge up to 5. We will have practical activities during the session and provision throughout the day to help with our mathematical progression. We will use a range of manipulatives and representations to help us with our maths.

Year 1: In maths we are focusing on our place value within 10, addition and subtraction within 10 and shapes. We will have hands on activities to help our progression along with extra challenges to help us enhance our knowledge. We will use a variety of representations to help us with our learning as well as the key facts and vocabulary to strengthen our mathematical language.

PSHE

As well as our my happy mind lessons we will also have PSHE lessons that revolve around community and responsibility. In these lessons we will explore our place in the community and the importance of different aspects within the community. Our lessons include looking at why we have rules, sameness/ differences, wellbeing and people who help us.

Science

Sessions this term will focus on seasonal changes and exploring everyday materials. We will use our observational skills to observe the changes around us throughout each season. We will track the weather with our ‘Robins Weather’ poster each morning. We will be using our senses to explore a range of materials that are natural or man-made. We will look at materials we see all the time and some we do not see every day. Our Science will also link to some of our outdoor learning, especially when we are looking at the seasonal changes.  

History

Our topic this term is all about The Medieval Time. We will explore the time period through looking at castles, dwellings, food, clothing, significant people and events that happened during that time. Throughout our learning we will be developing our chronological understanding through ordering activities and looking at pictures to compare. This learning will help us to compare what our life is like now to how peoples lives used to be in the past.

We have a main focus on The Battle of Hastings and The battle of Tewkesbury including the significant figures within. The significant figures included are William the Conqueror and King Edward IV. Our learning this term also includes a trip to Berkley castle where we will take part in activities and explore what it looks like.

Computing

This term we will be exploring different apps on the iPads and how we need to be safe when we are online. We will learn to understand that different types of technology are used for different reasons and go on a hunt to find different types of technology. Some of our computing lessons have a link to Art where we will use an app to create and draw pictures that link to our topic. We will also start to build an understanding on what certain types of technology is used for and how it can help us.

Music

This term we will be exploring music through listening to songs, using different types of instruments and singing. We will learn songs and sing to them to recognise rhythm and the beat. We will listen to different types of music and create our own pieces of music through exploring different instruments. 

We will also partake in a weekly singing assembly with the rest of the school as well as our class Nativity around Christmas time!

RE and world views 

This term our topics focus on two main questions. The first question we are focussing on is: Who do Christians say made the world? Our main focus for this question is based around the creation story where we will learn about what happened during each day. We will also touch on how Christians say thanks to God and what Harvest is.

The second question we are focusing on is: Why does Christmas matter to Christians? Our learning for this question includes our nativity and who Jesus is. 

Art and DT

In our Art lessons we will focus on two artists: Wassily Kandinsky and Andy Goldsworthy. We will learn about colours and mixing as well as creating a piece of our own artwork. We will use observational skills to look at the work of these artists before we start creating our own pieces of artwork. Our Art has direct links to Maths where both of our Artist include shapes within their work.

In our DT lessons we will have a link to our Science where we explore materials to plan, design, make and evaluate our own junk model castles. As we get close to Christmas our DT lessons will also include creating our own decorations.

Writing

During this topic Reception and Year 1 will be listening to a range of narrative stories with the main focus being on: The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Goldilocks and The Three Bears and Hansel and Gretel. The children will re-tell the story using ‘talk for writing’. Having identified key features of the tale they will create story maps and dive deeper into the stories through the language, character descriptions and setting descriptions. We will also be exploring instructions, what they are for, how they are used and we will learn to follow and write our own.

Reception will start by developing and strengthening their fine motor skills through a range of activities to gradually build up to writing sentences. These include using smaller tools such as scissors and pencils where they will master the ‘tripod grip’. This has a link to Art where Reception will take part in mark making.

Year 1 will continue to develop sentence structure using full stops and capital letters.
