In English, children will explore Jack and the Beanstalk, learning to retell stories, change key elements and begin writing simple narratives as well as non-fiction texts. They will also write a poem and a recount while developing word and sentence level skills, handwriting and spelling.
Reading and phonics will continue with daily sessions focussed on blending sounds, reading words and sentences, and building confidence with 'alien words' in preparation for the Phonics Screening Check for Year 1.
In Maths, Year 1 children will develop their understanding of numbers up to 100, counting, place value, addition and subtraction. Reception will consolidate their breadth of knowledge of the number system, addition and subtraction strategies within 10 including doubles, number bonds, odds and evens. The children will also explore shapes, patterns, grouping, sharing and simple problem solving.
Science learning will focus on seasonal changes, the human body, minibeasts and plants. Children will identify body parts and their functions, investigate plants and trees, and learn about common minibeasts and flowers - We will visit Westonbirt Arboretum.
Geography lessons will help children locate places on maps and identify physical features. They will compare Coberley with Cheltenham, and explore their local environment including using basic mapping skills and simple Bee-Bot programming.
Art and Design Technology activities will develop drawing, painting and construction skills. Children will study artists such as Van Gogh, learn about colour mixing, create minibeasts, and design a garden project.
Music will involve singing, listening to different styles of music, and performing the Jack and the Beanstalk-related song Fi Fi Fo Fum, with opportunities to play instruments.
In RE and World Views, children will think about stories that are special to them and to their community. They will explore Christianity and Islam, look at special books, and learn about respect for different beliefs, including a visit from a member of the local Islamic community.
PSHE sessions will focus on friendship, kindness, gratitude and building positive relationships.
Computing will develop skills in giving instuctions, using Bee-Bots, and creating simple digital art using Paintz.
