Welcome to Kestrels Class

Kestrels Class is for our Year 6 children, and is taught by Mr Merry.

This Term's Learning

The Summer 2026 term in Year 6 is a really busy one with all our preparations for the national tests, which we balance with practical activities too.

In Maths we are revising the majority of concepts we have learned with a focus on reasoning questions. We use materials available to us such as measuring tools, counters, place value charts and place value counters to ensure our knowledge and understanding is embedded. We learn about ratio and averages in this term, which we apply to real-life situations.

In Literacy we have a strong focus on punctuation, grammar and spelling with more revision and application of these things in our writing. We hone our inferencing skills when reading and work hard to ensure we understand exactly what a text is conveying and what the questions are asking of us.

Our History and Geography topics this term are World War Two and land uses around the world, which link well with one another. We learn about the causes of the war, what life was like in Britain during that time including rationing and how some children lived as evacuees. Our chosen text is Goodnight Mr Tom by Michelle Magorian and we draw different genres of writing from this including diary writing and non-chronological reports.

Our Art and DT link to our History work with learning about art and architecture during and following WW2 with studies of the work of Norman Foster and Henry Moore. To link with our Geography and Science, we learn about the landscape paintings of Constance Bradshaw and work with her techniques to create our own paintings.

In Science we are learning about living things and their habitats and what we can do to help the environment with a mixture of practical and theoretical learning. We learn about classification and devise our own classification key. We learn about climate change in terms of its causes, effects and possible solutions, and we measure our rubbish and electricity usage in school.

Our RE and World Views this summer term focuses on how someone’s worldview influences the way they live. We look at how beliefs and attitudes to nature and the environment shape the way people think and act, drawing on a variety of examples of religious/non-religious traditions or organised worldviews.

PSHE this term is about learning about how to look after our body and mind in a healthy way with a look at nutrition, exercise and hygiene. We learn about how humans grow and what makes healthy relationships.
